Formation of Magnetic Flocks

The magnetic flocks are formed by adding both of magnetic particles and flocculant into the suspension and by adjusting the pH by the alkaline solution. The scheme is illustrated in figure 1.

Photograph 1 demonstrates an example of magnetic separation of a mixture of dye and paper fiber as a model suspension. A suspension of Cu-Phthalocyanine dye and fiber is treated with magnetite particles and iron sulphate. The suspended black flocks are collected by a magnet.

Photograph 2 shows that fiber and magnetite particles in their flocks are closely linked together.
